Walking Window: Drawing On The Everyday Life Of The University Hospital
From 2013 to 2018, I developed drawing projects that invited people to pay closer attention to their everyday surroundings.
Central to this work was the idea that drawing is an activity that enhances perception. Through drawing, people can become more aware of the places around them. I also believe that viewing a place through a frame, such as a window, can help us focus more closely on a particular view.
In November 2018, I presented a new iteration of Walking Window at the University Hospital. Using a mobile window frame and transparent clipboards, I invited patients, visitors, and staff to draw views from waiting rooms and shared spaces throughout the hospital. The project resulted in a collection of drawings and photographs documenting the participants’ different perspectives.
This photographic series was exhibited at the McMullen Gallery in Those Who Wander, from January 5 to February 24, 2019. Gallery visitors were also invited to draw directly on a framed section of the gallery window inspired by the Walking Window design.
