profile

In today’s world there are so many visual distractions that prevent us from seeing moments of ephemeral beauty, but I believe overlooked, fleeting images in our everyday environment are there to be revealed. My eyes are always alert for small events, such as the way the sunset reflects off a building, transforming concrete into gold, or the way cranes shape our surroundings by making our cities grow and change in subtle and gradual ways. Being born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and then living in different cities and countries has also turned me into a continuous newcomer, always experiencing new places through multiple sensorial experiences. My art practice has underscored the need to be ‘present’ and responsive to experiences in our urban environment.  Consequently, my drawings, photographs, videos and participatory events enable viewers and myself to take an active role in perceiving our surroundings in a new, more appreciative, and engaged way. In 2014, I received a Master in Fine Arts (MFA) from the University of Calgary. My thesis, Perceptual Drawing: A Perspective of Experience, allowed me to intensify my study of perceptual experience in relation to the everyday environment. For ten years now, I have been developing public art projects involving site-specific locations and the interaction of local communities. Investigating places, and discovering their particularities, their stories, and their own visual vocabulary has always fuelled my art practice.
